Checklist: Preparing Your RV for Hurricane Season

All RVs need maintenance. There is a misconception that newer RVs do not need maintenance for some time. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Owners should establish a schedule of maintenance making sure you have all the boxes checked off before the hurricane season. Hurricane season is unpredictable. There may not be enough notice given before a named storm to prepare both your home and RV.

☐ Ensure you have a full tank of fuel to facilitate possible evacuation or prolonged generator use during power outages.
☐ Fill propane tank(s) to power appliances and ensure continued functionality during power disruptions.
☐ Service the engine to maintain optimal performance and reliability for evacuation or travel after the storm.
☐ Test engine and house batteries to ensure they are fully charged and capable of powering essential systems.
☐ Run the generator and service if necessary to ensure it’s operational for powering appliances and electronics during power outages.
☐ Check all seals, including roof, roof vents, windows, and compartments, for cracks or separations, and reseal as needed to prevent water intrusion.
☐ Inspect slide-out seals for signs of dry rot and replace as necessary to maintain water tightness.
☐ Replace water filter to ensure clean, potable water during and after the storm.
☐ Check wiper blades to ensure clear visibility during inclement weather conditions.
☐ Test all safety equipment, including smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers, to ensure they are functional.
☐ Sanitize freshwater tank to ensure the water supply remains safe for consumption.
☐ Check tires and tire pressure to ensure they are properly inflated and in good condition for safe travel before and after the storm.
☐ Emergency Kit Preparation: Ensure you have an emergency kit stocked with essentials such as non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, flashlight, batteries, portable weather radio, and a multipurpose tool.
☐ Secure Outdoor Items: Store or secure any outdoor furniture, grills, or other loose items that could become projectiles in high winds.
☐ Backup Power Options: Consider investing in a portable generator as a backup power source in case of electrical outages during or after the storm.
☐ Inspect Awning and Awnings Straps: Check awnings for any signs of wear and tear and ensure awning straps are in good condition and properly secured.
☐ Emergency Evacuation Plan: Develop and discuss an evacuation plan with your family or travel companions, including designated meeting points and routes.
☐ Insurance and Documentation: Ensure your RV insurance is up-to-date and that you have copies of important documents such as insurance policies, vehicle registration, and identification in a waterproof container.
☐ Weather Monitoring Tools: Install a weather monitoring app on your phone or bring a portable weather radio to stay informed about storm developments and warnings.
☐ Securing the RV: If possible, park your RV in a location protected from high winds, such as a garage or sheltered area. If that’s not possible, consider using storm straps or anchors to secure the RV in place.
☐ Plan for Extended Travel: If you’re in an area prone to hurricanes, consider having a plan in place to evacuate well in advance of a storm’s arrival, potentially traveling to a safer location outside the affected area.
☐ Communication Strategy: Establish a communication plan with friends and family members to keep them updated on your whereabouts and safety during a hurricane.

With this checklist, you’ll be well-prepared to weather the storm and its aftermath while ensuring the safety and integrity of your RV.
